Show Notes

In this episode of the Just Say Something Podcast, Philip Clark speaks with Stacey Ashmore about the IMPACT Youth Sports Program, a community initiative serving kids ages 6–12 in Greenville. Stacey shares how the program uses sports like soccer, flag football, and basketball to create a safe, positive environment where youth can learn teamwork, leadership, and character-building skills. The conversation also highlights how IMPACT connects with local elementary schools and provides opportunities for parents to engage in family and parenting programs through Just Say Something.

They also discuss the upcoming season, how families can register their children, and the importance of community support and sponsorships to keep programs like IMPACT growing. Stacey reflects on why giving kids a place to play, learn, and simply have fun can make a lasting difference in their lives.

[00:00:00] Speaker A: Foreign. Hello, and welcome back to another episode of Just say Something podcast. I'm Philip Clark, your host and CEO here at Just say Something. And before we get started, I want to make sure that you like this episode, that you share this episode, and that you subscribe to our podcast. And remember, Just say Something podcast can be found anywhere you have your favorite podcast. So today we have a return. Well, he's not a guest. We have a return person, Mr. Stacy Ashmore. Stacy, welcome, welcome. [00:00:46] Speaker B: Thank you, Mr. Clark. [00:00:47] Speaker A: All right, you got to get closer to the. Okay, thank you, Mr. Clark. And so Stacy has been with Just say Something for how long? [00:00:55] Speaker B: 21 years this year. [00:00:57] Speaker A: 21 years. And so with that, Stacy currently runs a couple of aspects of what we do with kids. One is he's in the schools doing our tobacco prevention and awareness programming. And then he is also running our Impact sports program for kids ages 6 to 12. So tell us what's going on with Impact right now, Stacy. [00:01:24] Speaker B: Well, with Impact right now we just rest and get ready to get started up for 2026. And hopefully we can start around March once we find ourselves field to start practicing on. And I really just can't wait to get started up. [00:01:40] Speaker A: Okay, so for the parents who are out there listening, what's, what are the requirements for kids to participate in Impact? [00:01:49] Speaker B: The one the biggest requirement is just to get some place where your child can have a safe haven at to come out and just to have fun and meet other youth that's around their same age. [00:02:01] Speaker A: So what ages 6 to 12. Okay. All right. And so what sports do we use for Impact? [00:02:08] Speaker B: We use flag football, we use soccer, and also we basketball. [00:02:13] Speaker A: Okay. So as part of that process, so parents bring their kids and they're there watching what takes place during that time frame. [00:02:25] Speaker B: Well, first of all, they have to sign up, sign each kid up to come out and play with us. And once they get out there, we try to say, we take soccer for example. We try to teach them the basics and the techniques of playing soccer because a lot of our youth do not get outside and play. And a lot of our youth, they live in apartments and they don't have that outside green space. And so we just say something and Impact youth sports have that try to find that green space where they can bring their children just to come out to train to how to play that sports. [00:03:04] Speaker A: Okay, and while we have the kids and working with them on their skills, what else are we teaching them? [00:03:10] Speaker B: We also teach them character building, leadership. We try to get bring in some nice speakers to Speak with the kids on certain topics also what they're doing. I have already a couple of young men that I would like to bring in that started I coached them when they was 12 years old, 11 years old, and now they're profitable, have their own business and to just to come in to let them know that if they can come from a bad situation to turn it into something positive, they also can do it also. [00:03:47] Speaker A: All right, and which schools do you typically recruit these kids from? [00:03:53] Speaker B: Now that's a good question. Is six elementary schools. I like to recruit from because these six elementary schools or feeder schools? Feeder to three middle schools and those schools are Grove Elementary, Thomas C. Kearns. Welcome, Alexander, Hollis, Monavieu and Cherrydale. Those six elementary school feed into Lakeview, is it Lakeview Middle, Berea Middle and Tanglewood Middle. [00:04:28] Speaker A: Okay, so those are the schools that we've been involved with and participated in programming with on. As part of On Track. Greenville. [00:04:38] Speaker B: Yes. [00:04:39] Speaker A: Okay. All right, so what's our next season [00:04:42] Speaker B: that's going to come up next season? Will like to say we'll start up probably hopefully soccer in April, flag football hopefully in June, basketball hopefully through in November. [00:04:56] Speaker A: Okay. And so for a parent to sign their child up, what do they have to do? [00:05:01] Speaker B: They just call here at the office at 864-467-4099 and. Or they can go online our website and go through JotForm. All the information is there under our youth sports program and they can sign up online and for forward it back to us and I'll send them a check. Okay. Or welcome to youth Impact Sports. [00:05:25] Speaker A: Okay. And what is was some of the information we asked the parents as part of them signing their child up. [00:05:32] Speaker B: We asked for the parents to God the God guardian's name and address, phone number and please, please the exact correct email. If you change your email, if you change your phone number, please please get back in contact with us because it's something. If you bring your child out to practice and you have to leave for a second or a minute or two, they get injured or anything like that. We have the numbers, all the kids numbers on the field and email addresses and if you have the wrong email address or wrong phone number, we will not be able to get in contact with you until you come back. [00:06:07] Speaker A: Okay. All right. So is there one thing that you want either the parents or caregivers out there to know about impact sports? [00:06:18] Speaker B: Yes. That's not just impact sports. It's bigger than impact sports. I would like them to know about. Just say something all the Programs that we have for the parents also that they probably know nothing about, like our parenting classes, our Strength and family program. Our Strength and family, my triple P programs. We have several programs. While the parents are just sitting there watching the kids practice, they can also be taking some type of class to a family class. [00:06:50] Speaker A: Okay. All right. So. And typically when our When Impact meets, is that once a week or how [00:07:00] Speaker B: often it's once a week. I try to set all our practice up on Tuesdays from 6pm to 7:30pm it give the parents a chance to get home, get their kids ready, maybe a snack and get them to the field at 7:30 to get them home and get ready for school. Take baths and get ready for school the next day. [00:07:21] Speaker A: Yeah, it's a school night, so yes. Got to get the little darlings ready for school the next day. All right, well, one more question. How long have we has Just say Something been providing Impact Sports? [00:07:36] Speaker B: This is going on its fourth year, and I'm hoping that this should be a great year, Mr. Clark. [00:07:41] Speaker A: Okay. All right. Well, if there's any businesses out there that would like to support Impact Sports, Stacy has a sponsorship flyer that he can come and meet with you and go over. So there are opportunities to support and sponsor Impact Sports. And so we look forward to hearing from any of you businesses out there. Well, Stacy, is if there's one more thing you wanted to let our listeners know about Impact, what would that be? [00:08:15] Speaker B: Let the kids have fun. When they have fun when they're smiling, their laughter is going to remind us how it used to be with for us when we were young kids. And I think each smile is better than a frown. [00:08:33] Speaker A: Yep, 100%. All right. Well, Stacy, you. You have really impacted a lot of kids here in the Greenville community. And as I always say, you're a kid magnet. And so kids come right to you. They're drawn right to you, and you're able to get to them unlike anybody else. So I appreciate all the work that you do on behalf of Just say Something in the communities and working with the kids and let's keep it up. [00:09:02] Speaker B: I appreciate you being letting me stay here. Just say something to help out. [00:09:06] Speaker A: All right, well, that's another episode of Just say Something Again. I'm Philip Clark. Today we had Stacy Ashmore, who does our Impact Sports program, along with our tobacco vaping prevention and education. And to get more information about any of that, you can fill free to call us at 864-467-4099 or you can go to our website at just say something sc.org and click on the tab under programming and click on Impact. And until then, we will see you next week and hope you have a great day. Thank you. [00:09:50] Speaker B: Thank. [00:09:55] Speaker A: You.
