Show Notes

In this episode, host and Executive Director Phillip Clark discusses the upcoming 2024 Youth Summit with Autumn Hightower, a team member of Just Say Something. Autumn brings a wealth of experience and expertise in engaging high school students in meaningful conversations about important topics such as stereotypes, peer pressure, and substance abuse. She is very committed to empowering young people and providing them with the resources they need to make informed decisions.

Phillip and Autumn discuss The Youth Summit, which was put on hold due to COVID-19, and how it is making a comeback this year with the theme "Why Does It Matter?" Autumn shares her excitement about the event and explains that the summit will focus on having conversations about stereotypes, peer pressure, substance abuse, and other relevant topics. As Autumn explains, "Why does it matter that we talk about stereotypes? Why does it matter that we talk about peer pressure when it comes to drugs, alcohol, substance abuse, all those type of things?"  The summit aims to engage high school students in meaningful discussions and provide them with resources to navigate these issues.

Autumn also provides details about the event, including the dates, location, and the inclusion of a resource fair. She tells Phillip, “It is going to be June 20 to the 21st. So, it's going to be a day and a half. So, it's going to be one full day, which will be June 20, and then on the 21st, it's going to take place from about 08:00 a.m. until about 12:00 p.m.  She emphasizes that the summit is no charge for high school students in Greenville County and encourages interested individuals to stay updated through the organization's social media and website.

[00:00:06] Speaker A: Well, hey, there we are, back again for another of our new for 2024, our just say something podcast. And so I appreciate you being here today. And so today we have something very exciting that I want to talk about with one of our team members who is heading this up. For those of you that know, prior to COVID, we had a youth summit every year for high school students. It was typically a two day event. And prior to COVID. [00:00:44] Speaker B: We had, right. [00:00:45] Speaker A: At 100 students the last time that we did it. Well, we haven't, because of COVID been able to do that. So in 2024, just say something is going to bring back our youth summit. So I'm really excited. And so with me today to talk about it is Autumn Hightower. Autumn is one of our newer team members, and she is really excited, loves working with kids, and so she's working with a team for the youth summit. And so, Autumn, welcome. [00:01:21] Speaker C: Thank you. [00:01:23] Speaker A: So, as we look at the youth summit for this year, what's our theme going to be? [00:01:29] Speaker C: So the theme is, why does it matter? So it's more so having those conversations, like, why does it matter that we talk about the stereotypes? Why does it matter that we talk about peer pressure when it comes to drugs, alcohol, substance abuse, all those type of things? Why does it matter that different kind of trends? Does it have a positive effect? Does it have a negative effect on you? It's a very broad topic, and as well as conversation with our kids, which is going to be geared towards high schoolers, actually. So I'm really excited. It's going to be a great time. [00:02:04] Speaker D: Okay. [00:02:05] Speaker A: And so when is it? [00:02:08] Speaker C: So it's going to take place? June 20, 20th to the 21st. So it's going to be essentially a day and a half. So it's going to be one full day, which will be the June 20, and then on the 21st, it's going to take place from about 08:00 a.m. To about 12:00 p.m. And then afterwards from 01:00 p.m. To 04:00 p.m. Will be our resource fair that we're looking to host as well. [00:02:35] Speaker D: Okay. [00:02:36] Speaker A: What kind of resources are you looking to host? [00:02:40] Speaker C: So it's essentially different services that's offered within our community. So different things like when it comes to health or even transportation, which we know is a huge problem when it comes to our teens, especially with jobs and stuff, different businesses that have different resources for kids that may be looking for employment services, different things along those lines. [00:03:13] Speaker D: Okay. [00:03:13] Speaker B: All right. [00:03:14] Speaker A: So where is it going to be. [00:03:16] Speaker C: So it's going to take place at the Ring of fire venue. It's more so like a satellite. I call it more so of a campus because it is owned by Ring of fire, but it's also subleased to different businesses that's in the area. [00:03:36] Speaker A: And where is it located? [00:03:38] Speaker C: So it's actually located at eleven five W. West Bramlet Road, suite 1003 in Greenville, South Carolina. [00:03:47] Speaker D: Okay. [00:03:48] Speaker B: All right. [00:03:48] Speaker A: So is there a cost for teens to attend this? [00:03:53] Speaker C: No, no cost. We just ask that you come bring yourselves. You can have your cell phones, but we'll obviously ask kids to silence them so we can have the full intimacy of conversations. [00:04:06] Speaker D: Okay. [00:04:07] Speaker A: And where are you looking to recruit participants from? [00:04:13] Speaker C: So, obviously, word of mouth is a great thing, but as I'm out and Stacey and myself are doing our tobacco programs, we're out having conversations with the school and the administration team. But it'll even go as far beyond that. So any mentoring groups, which I actually did a presentation with blush girls mentoring located in Malden Middle and just taking it beyond schools. [00:04:43] Speaker D: Okay. [00:04:44] Speaker B: All right. [00:04:45] Speaker A: So any teen in Greenville county or high school student in Greenville county can attend for free. So if someone's listening to this and they have a teenager that they think they may want to attend, what's the best way for them to register? [00:05:05] Speaker C: So I'm going to be completely honest with you. Registration is slowly in the works. We're looking to have that done by mid March. So as of right now, you could email me with your students or child's name email and the school that they attend. And also as a parent or guardian, leave your email as well. So that way we can get in contact with you and as well as send you the information for registration, or I'll personally fill it out for you. [00:05:37] Speaker B: Okay. [00:05:40] Speaker A: I know one thing for teens. Is food included. [00:05:44] Speaker C: Oh, of course. So, actually, the restaurant, white bread and butter, will be doing all our catering for us. [00:05:50] Speaker D: Okay. [00:05:51] Speaker B: All right. [00:05:51] Speaker A: And so when you say all of our catering, what does that include? [00:05:54] Speaker C: That'll include lunch and breakfast. So with June 20, with it being a full day, they will provide breakfast and lunch. And then on the second day, since it's only a half day, they'll be providing breakfast, and then there'll be food trucks at the reese force fair. So that's how they'll. [00:06:15] Speaker D: Okay, cool. [00:06:18] Speaker A: So where can those out there that are listening, where can they go to find out more information? [00:06:23] Speaker C: So, again, just be more so on the lookout for our social media page, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, et cetera. We're looking to update the website soon with the information that we have. So just be on the lookout for that. [00:06:40] Speaker B: All right. [00:06:40] Speaker A: Any last thought that you would like to tell anyone out there listening who either may be a teen or may have a teen that might want to attend? [00:06:51] Speaker C: Not that I can think of off the top of my head. [00:06:54] Speaker D: Okay. [00:06:54] Speaker B: All right. [00:06:55] Speaker A: Well, Autumn Hightower is putting together our 2024 youth summit, and the theme again. [00:07:03] Speaker C: Is, why does it matter? [00:07:05] Speaker A: Why does it matter? And so as more information becomes available, you'll be able to go to our website. Just saysomethingsc.org. And if you have any other questions, you can always feel free to call at area code 864-467-4099 all right, autumn, thanks for being with us. And hopefully we'll do this again sooner. Closer.
